2021 is the first year of my country's "14th Five-Year Plan", and the domestic box office bucking the trend during the Spring Festival at the beginning of the year has also pushed the future development of my country's film industry to the focus of public attention. At the just-concluded Fourth Session of the 13th National People's Congress, Hou Guangming, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and former party secretary of the Beijing Film Academy, put forward his own views on the development of my country's film industry during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period. These suggestions also point out a new direction for my country's independent research and development of LED display technology.
Hou Guangming pointed out that Chinese films are duty-bound to undertake the important task of building a film power, thereby promoting the realization of the long-term goal of building a socialist cultural power in 2035. He also suggested that Chinese films need to be laid out in five aspects, including "actively developing LED film projection screen systems, and striving to achieve "curve overtaking"." He pointed out that although the speed and scale of the digital transformation and upgrading of my country's film industry are among the top in the world, there are still problems with professional digital imaging devices and digital display devices that lack core technologies and independent chips.
On the one hand, my country’s more than 70,000 digital film projection systems and equipment must follow the DCI specifications proposed by the Hollywood Digital Film Advocacy Organization. This makes it not only very difficult for my country’s digital projector manufacturers to pass the certification, but also expensive. On the other hand, the core components of digital projectors are still dominated by foreign brands, and there is no lack of "stuck neck" technology, which makes my country's film market very easy to fall into the dilemma of "making clothes for others". Therefore, efforts must be made to achieve independent research and development in film imaging and projection related technologies and standards, and strive to achieve curve overtaking during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period.
In this regard, he specifically pointed out that in recent years, LED display screens have been used in movie projections, which has had an impact on the traditional digital projection projection mode. At the same time, my country is the world leader in LED display R&D and manufacturing capabilities. It not only has the ability to develop LED movie projection screens with independent intellectual property rights, but also has a relatively complete industrial chain and the support of the world's first largest market. If it is actively promoted, It is expected to break foreign monopolies and strengthen my country's dominant and voice in the film and entertainment industry.
To achieve all this, the joint efforts of related manufacturers, film operators, and national policies are required. First of all, on the R&D and manufacturing side, it is necessary to strengthen top-level design and overall coordination to stimulate the enthusiasm of enterprises for independent innovation; secondly, it is necessary to actively study and formulate my country's independent large-screen projection technology standards; secondly, it is necessary to support the application of domestic LED projection systems in theaters. Give priority support in terms of film arrangement.
In fact, in recent years, my country’s LED display companies have actively carried out related efforts to promote LED displays into movie theaters, including continuous optimization of technical indicators such as high resolution, high frame rate, high dynamic range, and wide color gamut. And deep integration with immersive viewing, 5G transmission and other technologies.
It is worth mentioning that only Samsung and other brands currently carry out the layout of several LED movie screens around the world, and the reason is also related to the DCI certification. Fortunately, many LED screen companies in my country have made it clear that they have made active efforts to obtain DCI certification and believe that LED screens will soon enter the film projection market.
With the continuous support of the "14th Five-Year Plan", for Chinese LED display companies, pushing LED screens into movie theaters is no longer just a business activity of individual companies, but is burdened with the revitalization of domestic display technology. An era's trend, the important task of the era to enhance the right to speak in China's manufacturing. It is believed that under the active promotion of relevant policies, the development and application of LED movie screens in my country will be expected to usher in a wave of small climaxes.
