China’s local controllable 55nm chip manufacturing is more meaningful than the fully imported 7nm

"Integrated circuits are a very typical global industry. In the post-Moore's Law era, the development trend of industrial technology has slowed down, and system architecture, special processes and advanced packaging have much to do in chip manufacturing." Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, School of Micro-Nanoelectronics, Zhejiang University Dean Wu Hanming said.

At this stage, the complex international situation has caused my country to face greater barriers to the technological innovation of integrated circuits.

Wu Hanming pointed out that at this stage, the extreme combination of ultra-small (nano) and super-large (trillion transistors) manufacturing processes has become the mainstream, and this combination puts forward higher requirements on chip manufacturing processes.

From a technical perspective, my country's chip manufacturing has a weak technical foundation and lack of industrial technology reserves. As the pioneers of the world's leading enterprises, they laid down intellectual property barriers in the early stage. In this case, domestic companies need to have their own patent database and master core technologies.

Wu Hanming said that there are many links in the integrated circuit industry chain. At present, the shortcomings of domestic industrial development are equipment. For example, my country has weaknesses in lithography machines. In the field of testing, Chinese companies rarely get involved, so the development of domestic industries in this field is basically blank. In terms of semiconductor materials, my country's photoresist, mask, and large silicon wafer products almost all rely on imports.

At present, my country does not have an advantage compared with foreign companies in the research and development of advanced processes, but there is huge room for innovation in the system structure. Wu Hanming pointed out that it is necessary to rely on existing domestic forces to create a new system that "subverts the traditional computer architecture". The use of heterogeneous single-chip integration technology is one example of this. Through the heterogeneous single-chip integration technology, the performance of the chip can be improved according to the demand when the 40nm process is adopted.

In addition, under the circumstance that advanced process R&D is not dominant, my country can use mature technology to improve the performance of chips. Wu Hanming believes that the combined application of special craftsmanship, advanced systems and advanced packaging technologies can make our country promising in the field of chip manufacturing. "Compared with the fully imported 7nm, the local controllable 55nm is of greater significance." Wu Hanming said.

Wu Hanming also put forward suggestions for the development of my country's semiconductor industry. He said that, first of all, we must attach importance to the localization of the industrial chain and allow manufacturing capacity to grow, at least the growth rate is higher than that of the world. Secondly, it is necessary to establish an industrial technology-oriented scientific and technological culture, and technological achievements rely solely on market appraisal. Finally, it is necessary to accelerate the construction of a public technology research and development platform, and give full play to the advantage of "concentrating power to do big things."
